Bobbie Carroll Gant

Bobbie Carroll Gant, 76, of Gallatin, Tennessee and Sharon Grove, Kentucky, died on Monday, August 21, 2017 in Nashville, Tennessee. He was born Sunday, November 24, 1940 in a log cabin on the Gant Farms in Sharon Grove, Kentucky. He was the son of the late James Dueard Gant and the late Sylvia Driskill Gant. He was the husband of Linda Williams Gant who survives. Also surviving are sons, Ed Gant (Julie) of Hendersonville, TN and Jim Gant (Sherry) of Matthews, NC; brother, Mitchell Gant (Karen) of Sarasota, FL; eight grandchildren (Callie, Paden, Travis, Shelby, Mackensie, Cameron, Mollie and Caleb); two great-grandchildren (Savannah and Gunnar). Proudly serving his country in the United States Air Force from 1961 until 1987, he retired as Chief Master Sergeant (E9) earning numerous medals, awards and citations: • Meritorious service medal • Air Force Commendation medal • Air Force Achievement medal • Air Force Good Conduct medal • Small Arms Expert Marksmanship ribbon • Air Force NCO PME ribbon • Combat Readiness medal • Air Force Training ribbon • Air Force Longevity Service award • National Defense Service medal • Air Force Overseas Short Tour ribbon As a young missileer serving on a launch crew in an Atlas F missile silo, his training and dedication were put to test during the Cuban missile crisis of 1962. He was grateful the launch codes were never sent. Eight years into his career, he nearly made Air Force history as the first civilian on alert while serving in a combat-ready Titan II missile complex. Bad weather had prevented him from leaving the complex to reenlist; consequently, he was sworn in by the crew commander on duty. His launch crew experience proved valuable when he applied and was accepted as an instructor in Air Training Command, preparing young airmen to serve on launch crews. Along with the lifelong friendships he made in the Air Force, the discipline and patriotism followed him into his civilian life. Working on the space shuttle and with NASA, we cannot think of a more fitting day for him to pass, than on our major celestial event with the eclipse of 2017. He was a member of Gideons International and was an Honorary Deacon at Mt. Vernon General Baptist Church where he was a former Sunday School Teacher and Superintendent. A funeral service will be at 10:00 am on Friday at Mt. Vernon General Baptist Church, 5297 Coal Bank Road, Sharon Grove, Kentucky 42280 with Brother Glen Harper and Brother Barry Noe officiating. Interment will be in Gant Cemetery, Sharon Grove, KY. The family will receive friends from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Thursday, August 24, 2017 at Price Funeral Home, Inc., 252 E. Green Street, Lewisburg, KY 42256 and after 9:00 am on Friday, August 25, 2017, at Mt. Vernon General Baptist Church, 5297 Coal Bank Road, Sharon Grove, KY.
